Search for tools in this category and you will find AI SDRs, AI BDRs, AI sales agents, AI prospecting agents and AI GTM engineers, all describing products that do substantially the same thing.
Some of that is meaningful. Most of it is positioning. Here is what each term means, where it came from, and which distinctions actually change a buying decision.
The human roles first
The AI terms inherit their confusion from the human ones.
SDR — Sales Development Representative. Traditionally handles inbound. Someone downloads a guide or requests a demo, the SDR qualifies them and passes them to an account executive.
BDR — Business Development Representative. Traditionally handles outbound. Cold prospecting into accounts that have shown no interest.
That distinction held in enterprise software for about a decade and has since largely collapsed. Most companies now use SDR for both, or pick one title and give it the whole job. In practice, when someone says SDR today they usually mean “the person doing outbound prospecting”, which is the BDR definition.
So the human terms were already muddled before AI vendors started borrowing them.
How the AI terms are actually used
AI SDR. The dominant label. Covers products that source prospects, write sequences, send, follow up and handle replies. It won because it was first to market as a category name, not because it is more accurate.
AI BDR. Same product, different label. Vendors using it are usually either emphasising the outbound-only nature, or differentiating from a competitor who took the SDR label. There is no consistent functional difference.
AI sales agent. Broader and vaguer. Sometimes the same thing, sometimes a product that also touches later-funnel work like follow-ups after a demo. The word “agent” is doing marketing work rather than definitional work.
AI prospecting agent. Usually narrower — list building and research, without the sending layer. This one occasionally is a real distinction.
AI GTM engineer. A recent arrival, normally describing a workflow-builder rather than an autonomous system. Closer to an automation platform with AI steps than to an AI SDR.
The two distinctions that are real
Ignore the names. There are two axes that genuinely change what you are buying.
Does it source, or does it only send?
Some products build the list. You give them an ICP description and they find people who match, enrich them and enrol them. Others require you to bring the list and handle only sequencing and sending.
This is a substantial difference in what you need alongside the tool and what it costs. A product that does not source means a separate data subscription and somebody doing list building.
Does it handle replies, and with how much autonomy?
Covered at length in the reply agent piece, and it is the distinction that matters most. Sending is a volume problem where a bad output costs almost nothing. Replying is a judgement problem where a bad output costs a prospect who just raised their hand.
Products vary enormously here: some only draft, some send autonomously, some route by category, some have no reply capability at all despite the “agent” in the name.
Those two questions separate the category far better than SDR-versus-BDR does.
A workable taxonomy
| Type | Sources leads | Sends | Handles replies | What you also need |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prospecting agent | Yes | No | No | A sending platform |
| Sequencing tool with AI | No | Yes | Drafts only | A data source, a person on replies |
| AI SDR | Usually | Yes | Yes, varying autonomy | Infrastructure, oversight |
| Reply agent | No | No | Yes | Everything upstream |
| Workflow builder | Via integrations | Via integrations | Via integrations | Technical time to build it |
Any product will fit somewhere on that table regardless of what it calls itself. Place it there before comparing prices, because a $99 tool and a $499 tool in different rows are not competing.
Questions that cut through the naming
- Do I bring the list, or does it build one? If it builds one, from what database, and is that metered separately?
- Does it handle replies? Can I set autonomy per reply type?
- Does it include mailboxes and warmup, or do I buy infrastructure separately?
- What does it do when it does not know what to do?
- What is the fully loaded monthly cost at my volume with everything switched on?
Five questions, none of which reference SDR, BDR or agent, and together they tell you more than any category comparison.
Why the naming is likely to get worse
The category is growing fast and differentiation is hard, because most products do similar things at similar quality. Naming is the cheapest available differentiator, so expect more terms rather than fewer.
The practical defence is to stop treating category names as information. Place each product on the table above, ask the five questions, and compare the fully loaded cost. The label tells you about the vendor’s positioning strategy and nothing about the software.
The short version
AI SDR and AI BDR are the same product with different labels, inherited from human job titles that had already stopped meaning different things. AI sales agent is broader and vaguer. AI prospecting agent is occasionally narrower in a real way.
What actually varies is whether a product sources leads, whether it handles replies, and how much autonomy you can grant on each. Ask about those and the naming stops mattering.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an AI SDR and an AI BDR?
Functionally, nothing consistent. Both describe products that source prospects, write sequences, send and handle replies. The labels come from human job titles that had already merged in most organisations.
What is an AI sales agent?
A broader and less defined term. Sometimes identical to an AI SDR, sometimes describing a product that also handles later-funnel follow-ups. Check what it actually does rather than relying on the name.
What is the difference between an SDR and a BDR?
Traditionally SDRs handled inbound qualification and BDRs handled cold outbound. Most companies now use the titles interchangeably, with SDR usually meaning outbound prospecting.
How do I compare AI SDR tools?
Ignore category names. Establish whether each product sources leads, whether it handles replies and with what autonomy, whether infrastructure is included, and what it costs fully loaded at your volume.
